What is Permeable Concrete?

When looking for trusted permeable concrete suppliers, look no further than 2 Brothers Concrete & Pumping.

We offer a complete supply and delivery service tailored to commercial and domestic projects across the region. Delivered via our state-of-the-art volumetric trucks, we mix your preferred design on-site - so you only pay for what you need.

Permeable concrete, also known as no-fines concrete, is engineered with reduced fine aggregates and only uses coarse materials like gravel and crushed stone.

This creates a naturally porous structure, allowing rainwater to pass directly through the slab and into the ground below. It’s a highly effective solution for reducing surface water runoff and complying with SUDS guidelines.

The concrete is typically held together by a thin layer of cement paste, offering reliable structural integrity while maintaining permeability. It’s a popular choice for driveways, pathways, patios, and public spaces where drainage, durability, and compliance are key.

What Permeable Concrete Can Be Used For (And What It Can’t Be Used For)

Permeable concrete is ideal for applications where effective drainage and surface water management are essential. Commonly used for domestic driveways, footpaths, patios, and car parks, it allows rainwater to filter through the surface, reducing the risk of flooding and supporting SUDS.

It's also well-suited to public spaces, cycle paths, and low-traffic areas where water pooling could pose a safety risk.

However, permeable concrete isn’t suitable for every situation. It lacks the density and load-bearing capacity of traditional concrete, so it’s not recommended for heavy-duty applications such as HGV access roads, industrial yards, or reinforced structural foundations.

In these cases, standard concrete with a stronger compressive strength or reinforced concrete using steel mesh or fibres would be more appropriate.

For high-wear decorative areas, resin-bound or block paving may offer a more visually appealing and durable alternative. Our team can advise on the best solution based on your specific project needs.

How is Permeable Concrete Installed?

Installing permeable concrete requires careful preparation and layering to ensure effective drainage and long-term performance.

First, the area is excavated to the required depth and a compacted sub-base is laid, typically using clean, angular stone to promote water infiltration. A geotextile membrane may be added to prevent soil migration while allowing water to pass through.

Next, the permeable concrete, consisting of coarse aggregates, cement, and water with little to no sand, is mixed on-site, often using a volumetric mixer for optimal consistency. The concrete is poured directly onto the sub-base and spread evenly, avoiding overworking, which could clog the open pores.

Once levelled, it’s compacted using a roller or plate compactor to bond the coarse aggregates without sealing the surface. No additional finishing (like trowelling) is required, preserving the porous structure.

The slab is then left to cure, typically for 7 days, under damp conditions or with curing compound.

The Benefits of Our Permeable Concrete

Pay For What You Lay

We will produce your concrete in our mix-on-site trucks at your project site, meaning we will only make as much as you need.

Our operators are experts at helping you work out how much concrete you will need for your space, so we will never generate too much concrete. This means you will never have extra material or face disposal charges.

Additionally, because permeable concrete uses a lower amount of aggregates, it can be cheaper than other concrete mixes.

Durable and Long-Lasting

Permeable concrete can be incredibly strong because it doesn’t shrink as much and is more malleable. This reduced shrinkage minimises the risk of cracks and structural weaknesses, while its malleability allows it to better absorb and distribute loads and stresses.

As a result, no-fines concrete not only maintains its structural integrity under various conditions but also exhibits enhanced durability, making it a very long-lasting material that can withstand the test of time.

Reduced Environmental Impact

Permeable concrete uses a small amount of coarse primary aggregate. The reduced amount of material going into the mixture means that fewer primary aggregates are mined.

This means habitats aren’t destroyed to get these natural resources, and we reduce the amount of fossil fuels that aren’t burned in machinery used in mining the materials.

Overall, the production of permeable concrete produces less carbon emissions, keeping your carbon footprint down and reducing your environmental impact.

Primary Aggregates and Cement Used

We only use high-quality primary aggregates and cement across all our mixes; never recycled materials. This ensures every batch of concrete is clean, consistent, and free from impurities, and marks us as one of the top permeable concrete suppliers.

By using aggregates of the same shape and size, we achieve a uniform mix that enhances both the quality and structural strength of the concrete. This level of consistency is especially important for permeable concrete, where even spacing between particles supports reliable drainage and long-term durability.

Professional and Friendly Customer Service

At the core of our business are family values. Run by two brothers who like a laugh, we know that a friendly face goes a long way. So, your dealings with our team will always be friendly and professional.

Concrete is an industry filled with jargon, so in our conversations with you, we will make an effort to bust our slang so that you understand everything we are saying, all the while providing insightful and helpful information.

Expertise and Experience

With a combined experience of over 25 years in the concrete industry, Callum, Liam and the 2 Brothers team have unparalleled knowledge and understanding of concrete.

They bring this wealth of knowledge to every job they undertake, taking a fresh approach to getting to know the details of your domestic or commercial project. This enables us to provide helpful and relevant advice on the concrete design mix to use, or the amount needed and solutions.

Comprehensive Concrete Services

In addition to our on-site production services, we also offer concrete pump hire to support a smoother, faster pour, particularly useful when working with permeable concrete on complex or hard-to-reach sites.

As experienced permeable concrete suppliers, we understand that efficiency matters, which is why we provide both line pumps and boom pumps to suit the layout and requirements of your project.

Our pumps allow you to transport concrete directly from the volumetric truck to the exact location it's needed, even over obstacles or long distances. This not only saves time but also minimises waste and disruption on site.

Benefits of using a concrete pump include:

  • Reduced Need for Manual Labour
  • Faster Project Completion Times
  • Greater Precision and Placement Accuracy
  • Easier Access to Awkward or Restricted Areas

Whether you're working on a domestic driveway or a commercial site, our pump hire service helps ensure a clean, controlled, and efficient installation.
