How Does Concrete Pumping Work?

Deciding whether or not you need to hire a concrete pump to get concrete to your project site often comes down to understanding how it works and knowing how it will help. A question we are frequently asked is “How does a concrete pump work? And do I need one for my project?”

Concrete pumping makes getting the material from A to B easy and a lot less work, so the chances are, yes, you do need one for your project.

However, which type of concrete pump you need will come down to your project and how they work.

The team at 2 Brothers Concrete & Pumping have been using this equipment for decades, so they know how they work like the back of their hand. In this blog, we share how each type of pump works so you understand their differences and can get an idea of which you might need for your project.

Let's dive right in.

How Does A Boom Pump Work?

A boom concrete pump has a robotic arm that can extend up and over obstacles such as houses, high fences or walls. Our operatives will control the crane-like arm with a remote.

Prior to arriving at your site and pumping concrete, our team will complete a site visit, where they will survey the project site and surrounding areas to assess access to the site and ideal locations for the truck to set up. They will make sure that the ground is stable enough for the truck to settle and that there are no overhead obstacles, such as tree branches or power lines that will get in the way.

On the day of concrete pumping, our team will arrive on-site at the time agreed upon with the pump. Before starting anything, they will need to set the vehicle up, correctly positioning the stabilisers on the ground so that the truck doesn't wobble while the boom is being manoeuvred and concrete pumped.

With the truck in position, the operators will then extend the robotic arm and position it to where you need concrete - if the robotic arm doesn't reach all the way, they will add line pump extensions.

Now, it is time to get pumping!

The concrete mixer will place your mixed concrete design into the hopper of the concrete pump. The pump will push the concrete through the pipes, up and over the obstacles, into the project site.

This can be a fast process with minimal work required. Once all the concrete has been pumped, we will reverse the set-up process to pack away, removing any line piping and folding the robotic arm back in before lifting the stabilisers.

We will ensure that we leave your site in the same state that we found it, making sure we move anything back into the position we found it (if we moved anything).

How Does A Line Pump Work?

A line pump works in much the same way as a boom pump. However, it doesn't have a robotic arm to lift over obstacles.

Instead, it has a series of pipes that sit on the ground, going around or through obstacles to the project site.

The set-up of these pumps will include stabilising the truck, laying the pipes out, and adding any additional piping needed to reach where it is needed.

The concrete mixer will then pour the mix into the pump's hopper, where it will be pushed through the pipes into place.

Once all the concrete has been pumped, the team will pack the pumps and truck, clearing up where needed before leaving.

Why Choose 2 Brothers For Concrete Pumping?

Concrete pumping ensures that you can get concrete to your project site without hassle and stress.

Our team are experts at concrete pumping and have a combined experience of over 25 years in the industry.

Using this experience, they can navigate any site situation, designing pump solutions that will get your concrete from the mixer directly to your project site without a fuss. We are problem-solvers and will put our thinking caps on to utilise our equipment in the most efficient way possible.

We have a fleet of line and boom pumps that use the latest technology to get the job done quickly and smoothly.

We also offer a comprehensive concrete package, where we can supply any concrete design mix you need on-site without volumetric trucks, which will discharge the concrete into our pumps.

This means you can keep all your concrete needs under one roof, with one company, reducing paperwork, coordination and stress.

As mentioned above, before completing any work, we will complete a site survey, which will assess your site and determine which pumping solution will be the best fit. During this survey, we will get to understand your project and recommend the best concrete mix (if you are unsure) and solution.

Throughout all our work you can rely on us to be honest, trustworthy, professional and friendly. We love banter as much as the next guy and are always looking for a laugh, so you can be sure we will have some fun while completing our work to the highest standard.
